Steam Machine, oof

That price is not great https://store.steampowered.com/sale/steammachine

Not quite an entry level PC price and not powerful enough for an enthusiast, it’s hard to not feel a little DoA with the steam machine pricing.

I mean look, you can pickup the PS5 for $599 and a the PS5 Pro for $899. Steam machine really needed to sit closer to the $800 range to be competitive here.

The RAM crisis and absurd hardware prices have really wrecked the industry. Let’s call it like it is, AI is the problem. I’m upset that it’s done so much damage to gaming man, seriously tragic.

It’s really hard not to talk about the price here, but it’s just such a big part of the story here for many gamers. Gamers Nexus did an awesome breakdown of if you DIY a PC today with similar specs. You would still have some money leftover to pickup a steam controller. It really should be the other way around, I should be getting some savings by getting a system like this mass produced. Something console-like

By all accounts, the steam machine WAS going to be priced at around $700-800, which would have been such a lock. Had they only been able to release back in 2025….

In terms of SteamOS, and as a PC gaming experience that works like a console, the steam machine seems really innovative.

What Steam has done for linux gaming and as another piece for developers to optimize for will no doubt continue to carve out that section of the market. I just really hope that something changes about hardware pricing in the next year or two, because as an enthusiast myself, I simply can’t justify picking this thing up or recommending it. Even though it’s technically a decent deal for a gaming PC at that price, and games will optimize for it when they can, it’s a decent gaming PC at CURRENT PRICES. Which are just not good.
