What a beautiful work vehicle!
Had to get two pieces of furniture recently, in separate trips, because my SUV isn’t the most capable. After that, and with some larger garden plans in my future, Ive been missing my old F-150 beater truck.
But to buy an old truck these days? It feels a little crazy now to get a gas guzzler with our looming oil crisis. Newer trucks are somehow 2-3x more expensive and hold their value for way too long, despite offering basically nothing but… make me feel big? So I’d probably look at something like an early 2000’s regular cab silverado, or maybe an old ranger. Unless there were an affordable EV out there? Maybe. It doesn’t quite exist in America. The only promising option right now is the slate truck which doesn’t seem to have a listed price (expected to be around $27k new). I’ve never bought a new vehicle or had a car payment, definitely not doing it now for something with 150 mi range from a brand new manufacturer.
Chinese EVs come out to about $10k, compared to $51k for an American EV. When you consider that due to the supply chain, there truly isn’t an “American EV” (due to the most expensive parts of the car being built in China), the picture is pretty grim over here man.
Maybe someday in like 5 years I’ll see an affordable work EV rolling around. And maybe the used EV market will be popping and upend the new car market. Somehow in America though? The things that actually matter seem to get more expensive.
